Wigston Roofing limited

Our History

A family business
established in 1979

Wigston Roofing was established in 1979 by Stuart McGorum, the late father of our director Glen McGorum. As a skilled roofer, Stuart started trading with just one other roofer and serviced the local residential properties of Wigston and the local areas; just 2 men and 1 van, Wigston Roofing had begun.

As a young man leaving school, Glen joined the family business where he began to learn and develop the intricate skills needed to be an excellent roofer. Glen took some time away from the UK and travelled to Australia where he resided for 4 years. During that time, after travelling around Australia and taking in its beauty and enjoying some adrenalin-filled adventures, Glen began to work with a local roofing company in Sydney where he was able to develop the necessary expertise and artistry of slating and tiling works, something he still very much continues and enjoys to do now, probably to escape the busyness and noise of the office! On his return to the UK, he resumed working with his father at Wigston Roofing where he became a joint owner of the company and soon began making plans of how to expand the company with his own vision and goals for the company to grow.

With Stuart’s retirement in 2015, Glen took over the directorship of the company; Glen began employing more operatives and a skilled office team to develop and support the administration of a growing company; alongside this, he started to secure some larger work contracts with exciting, highly reputable clients and the business began to boom.

Our company logo and tag line is “Built on Reputation” and it’s a great achievement that throughout the time we have been operating we have never had to advertise our services as our reputation precedes us; this is something we are immensely proud of.

By the end of 2025 there were approximately 50 staff working for the company, and with the added employment of Glen’s daughter Milly who has become the third McGorum to work for the family business. Glen’s vision for Wigston Roofing continues to grow and develop with our aim to be the best Roofing Contractor in the Midlands offering all aspects and variety of different roofing systems and keeping up to date with new training and new products on the market. We hope to have many more years ahead with Wigston Roofing continuing to excel and be a market leader.

Our Team

Meet Glen

Our Director Glen McGorum started working fulltime for his father’s business in the summer of 1991 at the age of 15

Glen spent his first years with the company labouring alongside his roofer father before travelling to explore Australia, before settling in Sydney to continue his roofing career.  Glen returned to the UK and was keen to work again with his father. He became a partner in 2006 and took over running the business in 2013, incorporating it at the same time.

Glen is Sole Director of Wigston Roofing Limited and oversees our talented management team with the day to day running of company projects. He is the visionary of our company and inspires and supports his workforce by passing on his wealth of roofing knowledge.

Wellbeing

At Wigston Roofing Limited we employ over 45 staff on a full-time contract of employment. To meet the demands of our busy work schedule we realise the importance and significance of offering every staff member the best support we can so they can work well and be productive in what they are doing. Within the construction industry the suicide rate is up to 4 times higher than the national average and we take our responsibility very seriously to care of our staff and ensure they have different avenues of support they can utilise if needed.

Contributing factors that impact mental wellbeing in the construction industry:

High-stress environments

Working under tight deadlines and budgets creates pressure and can lead to anxiety and depression.

Physical strain

Physically demanding work can cause chronic pain and injuries which can lead to wellbeing issues such as pain and disability.

Job insecurity

Workers are often employed on a project-to-project basis, leading to job insecurity and financial stability. This adds to stress.

Long hours

Construction frequently involves long hours, including weekends and nights. This makes it harder to maintain a healthy work-life balance, leading to emotional and mental strain.

Stigmatisation

The “tough guy” culture that often prevails can lead to stigma around discussing mental wellbeing issues, preventing some workers from seeking help.

To counteract these pressures, we do all we can to alleviate this in our day to day working structure. We have a range of mechanical lifting aids and working platform structures for our trained operatives to work safely with and to reduce any strain or physical harm to them. All our staff are employed under a fulltime contract with us, giving them a sense of job security and belonging. We have set working hours and always try to adhere to these; in some circumstances we may have to work away and would therefore offer accommodation to our operatives and make changes to the hours of work whilst they travel.

In addition to these supportive measures, we also offer an Employee Assistance Programme which is free and accessible to any member of staff and offers a range of support from financial advice, through to counselling sessions through professional means. We have 4 employees trained in Mental Health first aid and advocacy. We also have a designated member of staff to offer health and wellbeing support to anyone who would benefit from some extra support.

As well as, the EAP programme and mental health first aiders, we also offer paid annual leave to allow our operatives some much needed time off to rest and spend with their families and friends.
